2020 is stacking up to be a great year! We’re revolutionizing the mineral processing game with some incredible R&D projects. We can’t reveal too much right now, but we’re going to make some significant improvements to gravity separation systems, gold recovery, comminution circuits, and much more. There are a few things we can share, so here’s a sneak peek at what we’re looking forward to in 2020.
Improved Gravity Separation Systems
Sepro Mineral Systems is currently performing research for two innovative projects that will change the way we look at gravity separation.
First, we’re developing a new gravity concentrator that eliminates water consumption during gold recovery processes. The current Falcon SB Gravity Concentrator, which recovers precious metals like gold, flips between periodic run and rinse cycles.
While process water consumption for this machine is already low, we’re challenging ourselves to find a way to maintain high levels of gold recovery while eliminating any need for excess water. This will improve mill circuit performance and reduce the amount of water that needs to be removed later in the process.

The second research project we have in the works is a gravity separation computer simulation model. When this model is completed, we’ll be able to perform R&D and technology development on a computer rather than building circuits and running experiments.
Lab experiments are costly and time-consuming. Once the model is complete, we’ll be able to do our development work via computer. It will be the first time anyone has developed a model capable of performing these specific tasks to improve operations. The model is one of a kind and our research will allow us to capture the physics and flows of fine mineral slurries with applications for large industrial machines as well as pilot-scale equipment.
Improve Your Comminution Circuit with Microwave Technology
If you’ve been a subscriber to our mineral processing newsletter, you’ll know that we’re working with a team of experts to reduce energy consumption in grinding circuits by up to 70%. We do this through microwave technology.
Conventional grinding is highly inefficient. Using short blasts of high-powered microwaves, we believe we can break ore apart early on in grinding circuits and then use temperature differences to sort waste from valuable minerals. This process allows downstream grinding equipment to focus on valuable minerals instead of waste.
This technology is currently a finalist in Natural Resources Canada’s Crush It! Challenge. Wish us luck as we continue to work on this piece of mineral processing technology.
